Movie Review: 'Bhaji in Problem', but the movie is not!

Cast: Gippy Grewal, Gaurav Jain, Lara,Gurpreet Ghuggi, Ragini Khanna, Harbhajan Singh, Akshay Kumar (cameo)

Directed by Smeep Kang

Rating: ***1/2

Bhaji in problem is a unique Punjabi comedy of errors with excellent script and dialogues meticulously directed by Smeep Kang of "Carry on Jatta" fame. Hero, Gippy Grewal gives a stunning performance rejuvenating the audience. The plot is a little complex as Sundeep Cheema (Gurpreet Ghuggi) is married to two women, none of them knowing the reality as they are made to believe that he runs a business in which travelling is mandatory.

However, the polygamous arrangement of Sandeep Cheema comes under problems when Jeeta (Gippy Grewal) makes entry and lands up at his Mama's (Maternal Uncle, Om Puri) who is a theatre artist. The mama is also a close friend of Sandeep, who needs some artist to act as the potential bridegroom for Sandeep's sister, Preeti (Ragini Khanna). Sandeep essentially wants that she be married some place else. However, Jeeta falls in love with her.

However, Sandeep is dead opposed to Jeeta's philanderings with his sister since he is also aware of Jeeta's criminal past before he flee to the city as a result of the tussle between his father and another village goon. To cajole Sandeep, Jeeta ventures into helping him and disguises himself in different roles like Gaurav Jain, Maninder and Lara. This results in hilarious situations. The plot is further complicated as the Police Inspector, Harbhajan (Harbhajan Singh - Cricketer) who's in love with Jeeta's sister, Roop (Japji Khaira) appears on the screen.

The entire cast is rolling in a comic situation where battle of wits and charm is on display. The climax sets in when the complexities of the comedy unfolds evoking more laughter.

The screen play, script, dialogues, plot and cinematography are beautifully intertwined complementing each other. The music is not much to write home about and the songs can be considered average.

The direction of Smeep Kang is pretty good and he excels in situational and family entertainers and this is another example of his genius. However, the script reminds us of Carry on Jatta. He shall have to reinvent himself and come up with new ideas to keep his flag flying in Punjwood.

Gippy Grewal and Ragini Khanna were good but not exceptional but Gippy's fan-following shall sail him through. Om Puri is an excellent actor and his good command on his mother tongue, peppered with jokes is an additional fare. Ghuggi is maturing as a fine actor and the glimpses of it can be seen in this movie.

Harbhajan Singh's small role has nothing much to write about and Bollywood actor, Akshay Kumar appears just for an item number.

Watch this movie for Smeep Kang's mastery on comedy genre!

Devil Shopping!

The poor country pastor was livid when he confronted his wife with the receipt for a $250 dress she had bought. "How could you do this!" he exclaimed.

"I don't know," she wailed, "I was standing in the store looking at the dress. Then I found myself trying it on. It was like the Devil was whispering to me, 'Gee, you look great in that dress. You should buy it.'"

"Well," the pastor persisted, "You know how to deal with him! Just tell him, "Get behind me, Satan!"

"I did," replied his wife, "but then he said "It looks great from back here, too!"
