'Gulaab Gang' maker's gang robbery?

Even though his film 'Gulaab Gang' is similar to Nishtha Jain's documentary based on the pink saree gang in Uttar Pradesh, Soumik Sen is in no mood to give credit to Jain

Sohum Shah and Anand Gandhi are backing the release of the documentary Gulabi Gang that will release just before Soumik Sen's film 'Gulaab Gang'.

Directed by Nishtha Jain, the documentary is set to release on February 21 and it is said that Sen's film has drawn inspiration from this documentary.

A source says, `Soumik and his team have referenced this documentary extensively as it was shot two years ago and has already been to many film festivals. But ironically, the documentary was not getting much support here. Moreover, Gulaab Gang's makers have not taken permission to make a film on the life of Sampat Pal, who leads this group of pink sari clad women in real-life.`

Seeing the lack of support for the documentary, Sohum and Anand decided to present the same. `Documentaries often do not get a proper platform. Our own film, 'Ship Of Theseus', saw a theatrical release because of Kiran Rao's support. Now we are taking the opportunity to help Nishtha.



However, I am not sure if Soumik has copied anything from the documentary as I haven't seen his film,` says Sohum, adding that there is no hidden agenda behind releasing the documentary ahead of Sen's film that releases on March 7.

Sen's film stars Madhuri Dixit in the lead role and Juhi Chawla as the antagonist. Upon being contacted, the filmmaker denied drawing inspiration from the documentary. `My film is a work of fiction,` Sen said. However, another source insists, `There are a few incidents in the film which are rooted in reality and are strikingly similar to Sampat's story.`

Showman Subhash Ghai ,facing some hard times with his recent films not doing so well,discovered the hard way when Sonakshi Sinha decided to unceremoniously walk out of Subhash Ghai's proposed film on Sarabjit Singh, the Indan soldier held in Pakistan for spying.

The reason being given out is that she is too young to play Sarabjit's sister.

A prominent director gives a completely different picture of Sonakshi's change of heart regarding the Sarabjit project. `It's surprising because not only Sonakshi but the entire family was very excited about Sonakshi's role as Sarabjit Singh's sister. They said Sonakshi wept when she heard the script.The entire story of Sarabjit's predicament unfolds through the sister's character.`

Subhash Ghai chooses to give his mooh-boli bhanji a clean chit.



Says Ghai, `Sonakshi sent us a message that it was too early in her career for her to play the elderly part of Sarabjit's sister .She is right.It is a part of a mature woman and my director Ishwar Singh Muchchal is very particular about the correct actors and casting.`


Ghai says this abrupt departure doesn't diminish his love for the Sinha parivar. `Shatru is my close family friend for 35 years.Sonakshi is like my daughter.She is a good actor and a nice girl.She has every right to give a second thought to a project to safeguard her career interests.I wish all the best.`

Then Ghai adds, `Sonakshi heard the script and loved it. She only gave her vocal consent and did not sign the contract.We wanted to sign her only after Amitji agreed to play the role of a lawyer. This did not happen because Amitji is doing a lawyer's role in another film.`

'Dhoom:3' vrooms to global success, crosses Rs 500 crore

Rs.100 crore seems like a forgotten figure! "Dhoom:3", the latest instalment of Bollywood's successful action adventure franchise, has grossed Rs.501.35 crore ($83.56 million) worldwide since its release Dec 20 last year.

On Monday, its production banner, Yash Raj Films (YRF), issued a statement confirming the news.

"'Dhoom:3' continues to create history at both the Indian and overseas box office. It is now officially the first Indian film to cross Rs.500 crore worldwide," read the statement.

According to the breakup of the gross box office collections, in India, the action adventure movie, starring Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra, has grossed Rs.351.29 crore, while in the overseas market, it has collected Rs.150.06 crore ($25.01 million).



The collection totals Rs.501.35 crore.

The movie, directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and produced by Aditya Chopra, is yet to open in international territories like Germany, Peru, Romania, Japan, Russia and Turkey.

Early yesterday, he took to the social network site, Twitter, to state, `Wishing you and your loved ones a blessed 2014! May this year bring you love, good fortune and joy. Signing off as John and Priya Abraham made B-Town go in a tizzy that the star was single no more.

While John did not reveal details about the big hint he dropped, there has been speculations about what prompted him to suddenly spill the beans after playing safe all this while. Sources state that he was already married in December 2011 and felt it's time to announce it in the New Year. While others maintain his decision could apparently be because Priya could be in the family way.

John was snapped at Mumbai airport on December 28 enroute to the US where he was to usher in the New Year with Priya. Ever since the two were spotted together in 2011, after his split with long-time girlfriend Bipasha Basu, there have been murmurs that the star had tied the knot with Priya. He preferred to remain guarded about his personal life.

Though those in the know claimed that he had met her at the gym which Bipasha and he frequented, John preferred to remain tightlipped about the woman in his life. Later, however, he revealed a bit about Priya, saying that she was a banker, her folks lived in the US and that he met her through common friends -- a lot was still left to conjecture.


In November 2011, he had come out in the open to HitList about the special woman in his life. Some sources had then said that John is fiercely guarded about Priya because he regretted being open about his earlier love story with Bipasha. Now that he has announced it, looks like John's inhibitions are finally down and he is open about accepting the relationship.

The star is slated to be back in Mumbai soon.

Pakistani actor-singer Ali Zafar feels that his next film 'Total Siyappa' will bring India and Pakistan closer.

The film is set in London and is about what happens when a Pakistani boy goes to meet a girl's Indian Punjabi family and the 'siyappa' (total chaos) that follows. "I think people in India as well as Pakistan will enjoy this film. In this film things are shown in a comic way which people of both the countries will enjoy.

I am sure it will bring them (Indian and Pakistani) people closer. I am sure my fans over there (Pakistan) will love the film," Ali told reporters here at the first look of the film. "I have had a great and wonderful journey in India.

I feel fortunate to have worked with talented people here," he added. Director Neeraj Pandey of 'Special 26' fame, who has written the story of this film, changed its title from 'Aman ki Asha' to 'Total Siyappa'.

The makers felt the title 'Aman ki Asha' gives a different feel, though it is a fun film. It will now be called 'Total Siyappa' which means total chaos. "We had earlier called the film 'Aman ki Asha' as the boy's name is Aman and girl's name is Asha. But the film is more than that. So we have now changed it to a punjabi title, 'Total Siyappa'," Neeraj Pandey said.

'Shool' fame director E Niwas will direct the film and it stars Ali Zafar and Yami Gautam. It is set to hit silver screen next year. Neeraj felt that Niwas could do justice to the project and hence he chose not to direct the film. He also says that Ali and Yami were his only choice for the film.

Pakistani actor-singer Ali Zafar, who played the lead in "Tere Bin Laden", will be seen in a stretched cameo in the sequel to the 2010 superhit comedy, says director Abhishek Sharma.

Popular TV host Manish Paul, who made his big screen debut with "Mickey Virus", has been roped in to play the lead.

"You will not miss Ali Zafar because he is in the film, but he is playing a stretched cameo. Only Ali could have played the role," Sharma said at a press meet Sunday.

Manish came on board because the story demanded a new protagonist.

"Ali couldn't have played Manish's (Paul) role," said the director.



"This was a very conscious decision by the producers. Usually producers don't want to change anything in a sequel, but my producers were open about it because they knew the story needed a new protagonist," he added.

Sharma told media persons that "Tere Bin Laden 2" will hit theatres in six months time.

Pradhuman Singh continues to play an Osama Bin Laden look alike in the part two.

Actor Ali Zafar has reacted to reports that Shahid Afridi has not taken a dialogue from the forthcoming film "Total Siyapaa" well. He says the Pakistani cricketer has not demanded any explanation.

The film's teaser shows Ali's character, a Pakistani boy trying to woo a Hindu girl with a dialogue that implies that Pakistanis are fed up with Afridi.

As an aftermath, it was reported that the allrounder had demanded an explanation for this.

But Ali took to Twitter Friday to clear the air about how the dialogue is harmless.

"Afridi did not demand any explanation regarding the dialogue. He is a great sportsman and great sportsmen have sportsman spirit," Ali posted on the microblogging site.



The actor also requested his fans to first watch the film before forming any judgement on its dialogues.

"Request you all to see the full film with the complete dialogues and banter between the boy girl in the film, before making any judgement," he added.

Directed by E. Niwas and written by Neeraj Pandey, "Total Siyapaa" is a love story, and it also features Yami Gautam. The film will hit screens Jan 31, 2014.

'Dhoom 3' cleared with out a single cut in Pak

'Dhoom 3' becomes the first film to release in Pakistan after a court order stipulated that no Indian film will be censored or released in our neighbouring country.

The film, starring Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra, was cleared without a single cut by the Sindh censor board. Very encouraging.

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan said Tuesday that he treats all his films equally and his forthcoming release "Dhoom 3", which is coming out Friday, is as important as any of his own film from the past.

"I think for me every film is important. All the films I do are equally important to me. I treat all my films equally and I really love my work. When I do a film I join the process which is as important to me as the outcome," Aamir told reporters here at a promotional event of the film.

The 48-year old actor-filmmaker said that the enjoyment of the audience matters the most to him.

"What I really look forward from my film is when audiences sit in a theatre and the lights go out, how much they enjoy it. I work for providing that enjoyment. Success for me is when the audience come out and say they enjoyed the film," he said.



Aamir plays Sahir, a circus artist in the film, which is the third installment in the "Dhoom" franchise. It also features Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra in important roles.

Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, "Dhoom 3" is the first Indian film to be released in IMAX.

Alia hopes to work with Imtiaz again

Alia Bhatt-starrer "Highway" is yet to release, but the young actress hopes to work with its director Imtiaz Ali again.

"The film was supposed to release earlier, but it got pushed. I told Imtiaz sir that we have time and let's shoot it again, we can do it. So, if I could work with Imtiaz sir once again, probably 'Highway' sequel," the 20-year-old said here Monday at the first look launch of "Highway".

Alia says she wants to do the film's shooting all over again.

"Today also I want to go back to the first day of shoot and I want to do it again," she said.

The film, which also stars Randeep Hooda, will hit the theatres Feb 21 next year.

Shah Rukh, Yo Yo On Stage In Dubai

The Shah Rukh-Yo Yo concert held last week in Dubai attracted an audience of 60,000 people. Besides Shah Rukh and Yo Yo Honey Singh it also featured Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandes and Madhuri Dixit.

Yo Yo says this concert was the biggest 'live' challenge of his career. `For the first time I did such a rehearsed concert. I normally indulge in a lot of improvisation on stage. But this time every step, every move was planned.That's the way Shah Rukh Saab wanted it. Geeta Kapoor M'aam has given us some fabulous dance steps. This was an all-new experience. The concert was held in an open-air stadium.

Last month Yo Yo had a life-changing experience in Chennai when 18,000 people cheered and screamed at his concert.

Still moved by the experience Yo Yo Says, `Main Punjabi artiste hoon.And I sing in Punjabi and Hindi .In Chennai the youngsters listen to Tamil and angrezi songs. Yet they turned up in large numbers to hear me and cheer for my songs. What more could I want? God is great.`

Yo Yo's new single 'Blue Eyes' has garnered over 10 million hits in two weeks. That's twice the number of hits for the trailer of Dhoom 3 on the internet.

Arjun Kapoor, who has garnered critical acclaim for his roles in Ishaqzaade and Aurangzeb, has a packed shooting schedule. The young actor talks about accepting the failure of his films, having two big banners back him and surviving competition in Bollywood

Arjun Kapoor's day starts at 7 in the morning, as he gets busyshooting for Two States. The actor's day ends late in the night after wrapping up dubbing for his film, Gunday. He is finding it difficult to find some quality 'me' time before New Year's, but the young actor isn't complaining as he enjoys his work. Excerpts from the interview:

You seem to gel well with the Chopra-Johar brand. You have one film under the Yash Raj Films (Gunday) banner and another with Karan Johar's Dharma Productions (the Sajid Nadiadwalaco-production Two States).
It feels amazing to start my career with banners like YRF and Dharma Productions. While it makes me feel responsible about justifying their faith, it also makes me feel confident because though I am still discovering how good or bad I am, I have two big banners backing me.



Was it easy for you to accept Aurangzeb's failure at the box office?
Failure doesn't discourage me. As a journalist not all your interviews will be good. Similarly, not every film of mine will do well. In Aurangzeb I had to carry a songless drama that wasn't a typical YRF film. But doing a double role was challenging and I don't regret that for a day. Sometimes, the timing of a film's release doesn't work out or people are not interested in seeing a kind of movie. Maybe the film promotion gave a wrong idea about the film or maybe it was too early in my career to do a double role. People are not going to say, 'It's an Arjun Kapoor film so let's go and watch it.' I am at a position where my work will define me; I am not above my movie.

What do you think of the competition among young actors in Bollywood?
There are so many newcomers so there is this sudden race or competition. Ranbir Kapoor is the superstar of our generation. He has broken the mould of a typical Hindi film hero and has managed to get both box office and critical success. He does both Barfi and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and people love him for that. But he has already completed seven years in the industry while a lot of us have just started. If we all survive in this industry for 10 years then we will able to see who stands where. Everyone here gives his/her best. Ranveer Singh is doing amazing work. I would like to believe that Goliyon Ki Ras Leela - Ram Leela justifies him being touted as another superstar in the making.

Considering Ranveer's recent surge in popularity, do you fear he may take away the limelight in Gunday?
I am not competing with him. Else, I wouldn't have done the film. I want my films to be seen by maximum number of people. If it happens because of Ranveer, so be it.


You and Ranveer seem to share a 'bromance'.
We knew each other before we became actors. We started our career with Yash Raj Films so we would meet each other at Yash Raj studios. After Gunday, our friendship is now at another level. We spent three months shooting together.

You have been linked to your Two States co-star Alia Bhatt.
There is loose talk and Chinese whispers because I hang out with my co-stars. There was a special screening for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and I reached a little early and saved a seat for her so she sat next to me. Despite all these rumours our equation hasn't changed. I love working and hanging out with Alia.

You are also co-starring alongside Deepika Padukone in Finding Fanny Fernandes.
We finished the film in a month's time. We shot in Goa so I really had a good time. It was a refreshing change. The film is in English so it was a challenge. It helped me switch off from Hindi film culture for a month.

 

Suhana, SRK's daughter wants to be an actress

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's daughter Suhana is keen to become an actress and this was revealed by SRK himself in tweet yesterday.

The superstar's daughter Suhana Khan captained Dhirubhai Ambani High School to their title win of the MSSA-MI U-14 girls football tournament. Under Suhana's leadership, the team beat Arya Vidya Mandir 3-0 (via tie-breaker) in the final at Azad Maidan on Friday.

Proud father tweeted his happiness with a newspaper clip carrying Suhana's interview on winning the tournament and becoming an actress. He said, "Am quite reticent when it comes to praising kids' achievements but this is highly 'show off' worthy. You go girl!!!"

Watching her elder brother Aryan play football and also dad Shah Rukh, she developed a liking to the sport a couple of years ago. Apart from football, Suhana also practiced taekwondo four years ago.

However, even after being good at sports, she doesn't plan to take it up as a career.



In her interview to a newspaper Mid-day, 13 year old Suhana said that she wants to follow daddy's footsteps and plans to take up acting as her career. SRK's little daughter has had discussions with her doting father about her career plans and SRK is all supportive of whatever his children want to do.

I have spoken to him about what I want to be when I grow up. He wants me to study acting and dabble with both Indian and international cinema. After finishing school, I plan to go abroad, possibly America to learn acting and become like dad one day," Suhana said in her interview.

The speculations about trouble in Hrithik and Sussanne Roshan's marriage can finally be put to rest as the superstar has sent a statement confirming that his wife of 13 years has asked for a separation. For the past few months, there have been many stories flying around about the cracks in their marriage.

There was buzz about Sussanne walking out of Hrithik's home. Hitlist was the first to report about Sussanne's blink-and-miss appearance (Hitlist, September 9) at Rakesh Roshan's 64th birthday bash on September 6. She came with her mother Zarine Khan and siblings Zayed Khan and Farah Khan Ali for barely half an hour.

Even when the cake was being cut, she remained aloof from Hrithik.

After this incident, there were many such instances where Sussanne went missing while her family was present to support Hrithik during Krrish 3's promotions leading to further speculations.

October 5: When Sussanne's sister Farah Khan Ali launched her jewellery collection, Hrithik was present, but Sussanne was missing.

October 12: Hrithik was a special guest at a function and his in-laws Sanjay and Zarine Khan were present to support him, minus Sussanne.

October 26: Hrithik was to throw a birthday party for Sussanne but apparently he didn't.

November 8: Hrithik went to Pooja Shetty's amusement park with his kids, Hrehaan and Hridaan and sister-in-law Farah. Sussanne was again missing.

November 15: Sussanne was supposed to attend the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards with Hrithik, but she did a no show.



November 23: Sussanne while talking about Hrithik had said, `He has always only motivated me to grow at work.` When asked if he will be present at the launch she had said, `Yes of course he will be there for sure.`

Later on it was reported that Hrithik will not be able to attend the store launch and Seema Kapoor has asked brother-in-law Salman Khan to come for the launch. The store was to be launched on December 11, but later got postponed to December 18.

Will Sussanne shift to Bandra?
On October 5, Hitlist reported that Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne had acquired a property in Bandra. The flat is in a building, under construction, located off Turner Road. The industry buzz is that Sussanne, who is currently staying with her parents, will shift to this abode with the kids. The apartment is apparently worth R25 crore.
